8th VA Immigrant Advocates Summit

We are excited to announce the 8th Virginia Immigrant Advocates Summit.

Since its foundation in 2010, the VA Immigrant Summit brings together statewide immigrant rights advocates, partners, supporters and allies serving the immigrant population in Virginia to learn, discuss and strategize on issues impacting the immigrant community residing in the Commonwealth.

Fee registration: $ 35.00

SCHOLARSHIPS: Limited scholarship assistance is available to cover the event registration fee. To apply for a scholarship, please proceed with your registration and choose “scholarship”. Applications will be evaluated on a first-come first-serve basis.

Summit Goals:

  1. To educate and motivate diverse stakeholders in addressing the multiple needs and issues impacting immigrant communities in Virginia.
  2. To identify concrete rallying points around which advocates and stakeholders can mobilize themselves to take immediate action.
  3. To identify and understand the many challenges facing Virginia as a result of the state’s changing demographics and develop positive means to address those challenges and promote community reconciliation
  4. To create a forum for advocates and stakeholders to plan and develop action steps that address the specific concerns of the immigrant communities they serve.
  5. To create a safe place where advocates and stakeholders can form supportive networks that actively advocate for immigrant communities and their families.

Plenary Session: “Virginia’s Political Landscape and Legislative Update 2018” -.

This plenary session will discuss the results of the 2017 gubernatorial elections and its significance for the 2018 Virginia General Assembly and legislative forecast for what we might see next year including state and local interactions with federal immigration enforcement in the Commonwealth, in-state tuition for immigrant students, driver licenses for undocumented immigrants among other possible legislative issues.

This plenary will focus on the rise of anti-immigrant sentiment nationwide, Virginia in the aftermath of Charlottesville, and ways people are stepping up to fight hate in their communities

Policy Reflection on the Future for DACA Holders and TPS Recipients:

An in-depth discussion on the Federal policy initiatives for DACA and TPS, which will include a review of the 2017 Dream Act and the RAC Act. With an overview of the Virginia Congressional delegation and their stance regarding the TPS/DACA communities.

Join us for an interactive workshop to explore education and health resources that exist for immigrants in Virginia, how we can expand on those resources, and what we can do to advocate as a community for more resources while ensuring current resources are inclusive of all people, particularly those whose immigration status creates a barrier for them.

 “Understanding and advocating for Noncooperation with Federal

Immigration Enforcement

This presentation will discuss the mechanics of the different types of “cooperation” between localities and federal immigration enforcement, how they affect our communities, and strategies for advocacy against these policies and practices

Presented by:

·         Sophia Gregg, Attorney, Legal Aid Justice Center’s Immigrant Advocacy Program.

·         Charlie Schmidt, Public Policy Counsel, ACLU of Virginia

 

Unions and Immigrant Workers.

In this workshop, union representatives from several unions will discuss ways in which immigrant workers can achieve justice, living wages, and a voice on the job through participation in the labor movement.  Representatives of building trades unions including the Carpenters Union and Painters Union District Council 51 will describe how workers in the construction trades can obtain training through union apprenticeship programs, and work for union contractors that pay fair wages and benefits. Representatives of UNITE HERE Local 23 and 32bj SEIU will discuss their support for airport workers organizing to win union recognition and collective bargaining agreements that ensure fair pay and rights on the job. This workshop will discuss issues affecting immigrant workers in construction and the service sector.
