VACOLAO CONDEMNS RECENT ATTORNEY GENERAL DECISION TO LIMIT ASYLUM TO VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, GANG VIOLENCE AND LGBTQ REFUGEES FLEEING PERSECUTION

Fairfax, VA – VACOLAO strongly condemns the June 11th decision of US Attorney General Jeff Sessions that set an extremely high bar for victims of domestic violence, gang violence and sexual orientation persecution to apply for asylum in the United States. AG Session’s decision overruled a 2014 Board of Immigration Appeals ruling that established the precedent that membership to a social group was legitimate grounds for asylum protection.

Edgar Aranda-Yanoc, LLM, Executive Director of Virginia Coalition of Latino Organizations (VACOLAO) stated: “In overturning the BIA decision, the Attorney General broke with long-standing US support for humanitarian aid to those in need, effectively slamming the door on thousands of innocent men, women and children fleeing violence, condemning many to be returned to their countries of origin and the threat of great bodily harm and even death”

Beatriz Amberman, Chair of VACOLAO, said “The United States is admired around the world for its protection of human rights. The U.S. should continue offering protection and empathy to those fleeing violence or persecution in any form. We stand with immigration judges that for the past 15 years supported asylum protection for victims of violence. The decision of the Attorney General today emboldens perpetrators and abandons innocent victims.”

VACOLAO and our partners stand with the thousands of refugees who flee their countries in fear and desperation. We will push back against this gross injustice that literally could lead to the loss of many innocent lives.
