About the summit: Since its founding in 2010, the Virginia Immigrant Advocates Summit has brought together hundreds of immigrant rights advocates and allies from across the Commonwealth and has become an important forum to learn about and discuss issues important to the immigrant community as well as network with other individuals who support and fight for the rights of immigrants.

 Agenda:

  • The implementation of the Affordable Care Act in Virginia (The future of Medicaid expansion in the state, the establishment of healthcare exchanges,  the role of healthcare navigators among other important information)
  • Virginia Legislative Update 2013/2014 (Review of the 2013 General Assembly and what we are likely to see in 2014), in-state tuition, access to driver’s license for immigrants in Virginia, voter ID law in Virginia and concerns over voter suppression/intimidation).
  • Immigration Reform (Learn about the status of the bill that passed in the Senate in June, legislative efforts in the House and ways to get involved in reform advocacy activities)
  • Voting protection (Learn more about the impact of the recent Supreme Court decision concerning the Voting Rights Act and find out how to get involved to ensure that all Virginia citizens are able to exercise their right to vote)
  • Combating immigration fraud with state legislation (Learn more about this issue impacting immigrant communities as well how to get involved in state advocacy efforts to combat fraud on immigrants)
  • DACA In-state tuition for immigrant children (Virginia DREAM Act) – 101 Organizing and advocacy (Learn practical information on how to do advocacy and organizing around immigration issues with particular focus on the in-state tuition legislation as a case study)

ACERCA DE LA CUMBRE: Desde su fundación el 2010, la cumbre de inmigrantes de Virginia ha convocado a cientos de defensores de los derechos de los inmigrantes y aliados de diferentes partes de Virginia para discutir temas de importancia para nuestra comunidad. La cumbre es una gran oportunidad para conocer y establecer contacto con personas que apoyan y luchan por los derechos de los inmigrantes en Virginia.

AGENDA:

  • Reforma Migratoria: Cual es el estado actual del proyecto de ley del senado y cuáles son los esfuerzos que se vienen realizando en la casa de representantes y maneras en que puede involucrarse en las acciones que se vienen llevando a cabo a nivel estatal.
  • La implementación de la Ley de Seguro de Salud Asequible en Virginia (ACA). El futuro de la expansión de Medicaid en Virginia, establecimiento del  mercado de seguros médicos, el rol de los navegadores  entre otros importantes asuntos.
  • Protección del voto.  Aprenda sobre el impacto de la decisión de la Corte Suprema respecto a la ley de los derechos del voto y entérese como involucrarse para asegurar que todo los ciudades de Virginia ejerciten su derecho al voto
  • Combatir el fraude migratorio a través de una legislación estatal. Entérese más acerca del fraude notarial y su impacto a la comunidad inmigrante así como involucrarse en esfuerzos de abogacía en estado para combatir este fraude.
  • ACCION DIFERIDA matricula estatal (In-state tuition) para jóvenes inmigrantes (Virginia DREAM Act) – 101 Como organizar y cabildear. Aprenda información práctica sobre como cabildear y organizar en asuntos de inmigración, con particular enfoque en DREAM Act de Virginia como un caso de estudio.
  • Actualización de la legislación de Virginia 2013/2014.  Repaso de la Asamblea General de 2013 y que proyectos de ley se podrían presentar el 2014), in-state tuition, licencia de conducir para los inmigrantes en Virginia, leyes sobre identificación para votar y asuntos sobre intimidación y supresión del voto, entre otros.
